What you get
The car out and the house shut again
A stuck door is a problem with a sequence, and the sequence starts with the door left alone. Emergency garage door repair in Glendale, AZ means one call, a short set of questions about what the door did and what it is doing now, and a plan that does not involve forcing anything. The line is answered day or night. Many stuck doors come down to a spring, a cable or a roller out of the rail, and each one has a different safe next move.
- A car released from the garage without driving through a panel.
- A house closed up again, with the opening secure.
- A clear answer on whether the door can be moved by hand.
- One price agreed before any work at the door.

Signs
5 signs the door is stuck, not slow
The opener hums and nothing moves
The motor runs, the chain or belt sits still, and the door does not budge. Something between the motor and the door has let go.
The door lifts a foot and stops
It hangs there, then drops back. That can be a spring that has lost its carry.
A cable hangs in a loop
One side has gone slack and the door is riding on the other. Stop pressing the button.
The door sits crooked in the opening
One corner is lower, and the bottom edge catches the frame as it closes.
The bottom edge is jammed on something
A shovel, a bike, a bin or a swollen seal. Look before anything else moves.

What to do right now, before anyone arrives

Stop pressing the button
Every extra cycle can turn a small fix into a bigger one.
Do not force the door up or down
A panel can bend and a track can kink before a stuck door gives.
If a car is inside and the door is closed, a firm pull down on the red release cord disconnects the door from the opener. Leave the cord alone on a door that is up, or if a spring or cable looks broken, because the door can fall.
Keep children and pets clear of the opening and the tracks.
Photograph the damage, the spring, the cable and the door position, for insurance.
Clear anything that fell into the track, and look along both rails.

Good to know
What traps a door
A broken torsion spring. The door weighs what it always weighed, and nothing is holding it up. It will not stay open and it should not be lifted.
A cable off the drum or snapped at the bracket. One side loses its support, the door drops crooked and jams in the rail.
A roller out of the track. The door keeps moving for a few inches, then the roller wedges and the panel bends around it.
A dead opener with the door down. The red release cord is the way out, and it takes a firm pull down on the cord.
A bent bottom section catching the frame. The door closes, then stops on the frame and reverses, over and over.
A power cut or a tripped breaker. The door is fine and the opener is not. Check the outlet and the panel before anything else.

Panels and doors
Repair or replace?
A stuck door is often a repair. A spring, a cable, a roller, a hinge or a track section is a part, and parts get changed. A door is the answer when the bottom section has folded, when the track is bent in 2 places, or when a car has pushed the door and the panels no longer line up. A door that has been forced against a jam often needs a panel and a track section on top of the part that failed, and that is the moment the 2 numbers get close. The repair gets priced first, and a door gets priced beside it only when the damage reaches the panels.
Good to know
The car inside the garage
The red cord disconnects the door from the opener, and it is a way out only when the door is down and the springs and cables are sound, because the door then has to be moved by hand. A firm pull down on the cord frees it, and a door can weigh 150 to 400 pounds (HomeGuide). If the door is already up and the car sits under it, back the car out before anything else and leave the door where it is. If a spring is broken, the door may not stay up at all, and a person under it is in the way of the full weight. Leave it down, leave the car where it is, and wait for the call back. A day of inconvenience beats a night in a hospital.

Good to know
A door left open to the street overnight
A door stuck up is a security problem before it is a repair. The house is open to the alley, the driveway and anyone walking past. Close the house door, turn on the outside light, and do not leave the garage as the only thing between the street and the kitchen. Leave the door where it is rather than pulling the release cord on a raised door, because a door with a weak or broken spring can fall. Dust, leaves and animals can come in with the opening, and a monsoon gust can push rain across the floor. Say on the call that the door is up.

6 questions
What people ask us
Still have a question? Call (747) 243-2089 and say what the door is doing.
Can I lift the door by hand to get the car out?
Only if the springs are intact and the door is balanced, and a stuck door is a poor place to test that. A door that feels heavy or drops back has a spring problem, and it should be left alone.
The door is up and I cannot close it. What now?
Close the house door and treat the garage as open to the street. Do not stand under the door, and leave the release cord alone while the door is up, because a door with a weak or broken spring can fall. Tell us the door is up when you call.
Is a snapped cable an emergency?
It is urgent, yes. The door is hanging on one side, the other cable is carrying double, and the opener can bend something if it runs again. HomeGuide says never to operate a door with broken or damaged cables. Stop using the door and call. A cable is a repair, not a replacement, in most cases.
Can the door be forced shut so the house is secure?
Forcing it is how a panel folds and a track kinks. A door that is crooked will not close straight, and the damage from trying can be more than the original fault. Secure the house instead and leave the door as it sits.
Do you charge more at night?
It can. HomeGuide's spring page notes that emergency repairs in the evening, on weekends or on holidays carry premium charges, and its cable page lists emergency cable repair at $250 to $350+. The ranges in the table above do not price a night call separately. The price gets agreed before any work starts.
What if a car is trapped and the door will not move at all?
Then the red release cord is the first thing to try, with a firm pull down, and only on a door that is down. If the door will not release, or a spring or cable may be broken, leave the car and call. A car can wait. A door that comes down on someone cannot be undone.
